It might not feel like it yet, but fall is just around the corner! Luckily for the green thumbs amongst us, we live in an area that’s great for gardening even after your last summer harvest. Want to know what gardening tasks you should be doing in September to prepare for the fall? Read on, gardeners!
- Lightly prune and fertilize annuals and perennials like roses, geraniums, begonias, lantanas, verbenas, and salvias. It is also a good time to prune oak trees.
- Plant / divide and move spring-blooming bulbs and perennials like iris, daffodil, day lily, violets, ferns, and canna.
- Plant perennial herbs like thyme, rosemary and oregano.
- Prune the roots of trees and shrubs you plan to move in the winter. This gives them time to grow a new smaller bunch of roots that can be moved with them.
- As temperatures go down, water plants and lawn to the same depth, but less frequently.
- It’s still hot in Texas during much of the fall, so make sure your garden has plenty of mulch to help retain moisture and keep your plants cool. It also protects your plants when the cooler weather comes.
- Start lettuce, broccoli, spinach, radish, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, and other cold weather vegetable seeds late in the month.
